Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the 11th major port of India commissioned on 26th May, 1989. The port is situated, along the eastern shore of Mumbai Harbour, south-eastward of Elephanta island.  Jawaharlal Nehru Port is an all weather tidal port and it is the only Indian port built to international standards with high level of automation and computerized functioning.  It has a land area of 2,500 hectares (6000 acres).  It was built with the view to de-congest Mumbai port and to serve as a hub port for this region.

2.       Linear quay length of this port is 1280 meters. Out of this, 680 meters is with the JNPT and constitutes 3 berths for its container cargo.  Another 600 meters has been given on long lease to M/s Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) which is a subsidiary of M/s P & O, an Australian company.  Apart from these 6 container terminals, JNPT has 2 berths for dried bulk cargo and 1 multipurpose berth (which can also handle liquid cargo).  The maximum permissible draft for a vessel in this port is 12 meters and each berth can handle ships upto 70,000 DWT.  A third terminal to be jointly operated by M/s Maersk and Concor named Gateway Terminals, is under construction; it is likely to become operational in March 2006.

3. The Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House is located at Sheva, Dist. Raigad.  The Custom House has shifted to new administrative building on 14th August, 2003.
